11 signs. That's all it takes to show you that your marriage is over, and you're still hanging on for dear life. It's like holding onto a rope that is burning the most hideous, painful cuts into your hands, yet you just can't seem to let go.

You've done all you can, but to no avail. All that crying on the bathroom floor did nothing, but no combination will heal what has been long broken.

And still, you tell yourself, "Maybe tomorrow will be different. Maybe if I just try harder." Meanwhile the rope keeps burning, and your hands keep bleeding.

When nothing works, these 11 signs are what will prove to you that your marriage is way past its sell by date.

Overview infographic of the signs a marriage is already over

1 No trust left at all

Trust has to be the foundation of every marriage. I kid you not. You think it's love, but there can be no real love without trust.

From trust, everything else is built, so without it, you've really not got a hope in hell of making a go of having a successful marriage. When there's none left, you're left feeling numb. You're so paranoid. That's not what I said.

You make things up in your mind, I swear.

Gaslighting on top of broken trust. That's not a marriage you're fighting for, that's a slow erosion of your own sense of reality.

The marriage is over. You'll never be able to get it to where you want it to be, no matter how hard you try.

2 When the narcissist comes home, you feel nothing

Do you remember waiting for the narcissist to come home? That feeling of excitement knowing they were on their way. You felt a relief when they walked through the door because it was like having your person back with you.

Those moments will have been short-lived, and now you feel nothing. You don't even feel dread, because that would be giving them some kind of power. You feel nothing. To feel indifferent is to know you're truly in a place where you cannot resuscitate the marriage.

It's over, and you know there's nothing you can do about it.

Indifference is louder than anger ever was. Anger meant you still cared enough to fight. Nothing means you already left the marriage in your head, months ago.

This isn't something to ignore, in fact, it will only get worse over time.

3 Arguments are born from every conversation you start having

There you go, trying to be reasonable, and yet again the narcissist is making something of it. Every time you try to be reasonable, the narcissist finds a way to hurt you, and at the end of it, there you are, saying how sorry you are.

You feel guilty, and for what? You're always doing this. Here we go again. I can't say anything around you any more. I don't get you. You hear it all, and all you did was try to voice some thoughts or concerns you had.

There is no communication issue here; just a person intent on creating problems where there are none. This is all about control and it won't get any better, I promise you that.

One woman told me she started rehearsing sentences in the car before going inside. Rehearsing! Just to ask about a dentist appointment. That's not a marriage, that's a hostage situation.

4 Your life has become hidden from them

Why should you tell them about the great day you had? You've learned that there's no point because the narcissist always finds some way to either make you feel bad, or make it about them.

You mention a promotion, and suddenly they've had the worst day of their life. You mention a friend catching up, and the mood drops through the floor.

Everything you say will always be used against you at some point, and it took you a long while to understand that. When you start keeping yourself small, you learn that you don't matter, and neither does anything you've got going on.

As sad as it is, you do it to survive, and that's not how life, or marriage, should be.

5 In your mind, leaving has started to feel like a sigh of relief rather than a sigh of dread

It's common knowledge that a narcissist is going to make you feel like leaving them is impossible. You won't be able to cope, you don't have the finances, you don't have the confidence, you aren't clever enough to be able to handle the bills alone.

Stop and sit with this, because it's nothing but their toxic opinion to keep you trapped. Before, you'd dread the thought of separating, but now you're thinking, "I can actually see this. I can actually envisage leaving and enjoying it."

Imagining your life without the narcissist is a huge step, and one I don't think you can unimagine.

That shift is massive. You've gone from panicking at the thought of an empty apartment to almost smiling about it. Your nervous system already knows what your head is catching up to.

Listen to those thoughts and believe them.

6 Will they change? No, and you now know it

I know you were once full of hope, but now you aren't even sorry. Every good week you had with the narcissist felt like a corner you were turning, and for you, it felt amazing to think there was potential. Now, there's nothing.

Hope has dwindled, and it's become your fuel to know that there is life after this marriage. You're done chasing an idea, and tired of pretending everything will work itself out.

How many times did you tell yourself, "Maybe this time is different"? And how many times were you wrong? You already know the answer, and that's why you're here.

7 You stop reacting

You used to react, but now you give the narcissist nothing. It's not because you've tried hard to stop reacting to their behavior, it's that you genuinely don't care. You don't get drawn in, and it feels good to be able to have that emotional distance from them.

With that lessening of reactions, you now feel as though you're on top of your own wellbeing. There is no longer begging and pleading coming from you. You don't live to please them. You aren't overexplaining or apologizing your way out of every problem they have with you.

You aren't rude, you simply get on with your day, and you don't pause to think, "How can I make this situation better?"

This is progress. You think you're fighting to save a marriage by caring less, when in truth, you just care less.

And caring less isn't the beginning of a comeback, it's the quiet part of an ending. The heart checked out long before the paperwork ever will.

That speaks volumes.

8 You can picture a life without the narcissist

I know it may be perceived as a way of fighting for a marriage by looking like you have autonomy and independence, but this is actually a sign that you're seeing a life without a narcissist, and enjoying it.

When you've spent all that time being told you're nothing without them, to see that life before you means you're experiencing what it could be like to be without them. Let's face it, your marriage is well and truly over.

You see something in your future that you didn't or couldn't see before, and it feels good to think this could someday soon be a reality. You're not fighting here for your own space in the marriage, you're fighting to be out of it.

And that picture in your head? The quiet morning coffee, nobody sighing at you, nobody scanning your face for a mood to punish. That's not a fantasy, that's a preview.

That's a good thing.

9 You do it anyway

Whatever it is you want to do, you think, "If I can do it, I will show the narcissist that I am finally capable."

What do I mean by that? I mean anything, from painting the living room, to getting the job of your dreams; anything you think will improve your marriage. You do it anyway. What happens? Nothing. Nothing changes, nothing gets better.

That's because your marriage is already over, and you're fighting to save it by doing things you would probably just do without them. Hard as it may seem, facing reality is the best way to deal with a marriage that has long died.

My advice would be to continue doing whatever it is that you're doing anyway, but do it for you, not your marriage, and certainly not the narcissist.

Paint the living room because you love the color. Take the job because you earned it. The narcissist was never going to clap for you anyway.

10 The bedroom went cold a long time ago

Not just the sex, though yes, that too. I mean the whole thing. The hand on the shoulder as you pass in the kitchen. The quick kiss goodbye that doesn't really land anywhere.

The way you used to sit close on the couch and now there's a whole cushion between you like a border checkpoint.

Physical distance follows emotional distance. It always does. You can't fake closeness with your body when your heart has already packed a bag.

And the worst part? You've stopped minding. There was a time when a whole week without being touched would have crushed you. Now you count the months and shrug. That shrug is telling you something important.

I've heard people say, "We're just tired, we've got kids, we're busy." Sometimes that's true. Sometimes tired is the polite word for done.

Ask yourself when you last reached for them without a reason. Not a reminder, not a ritual. Just because you wanted to. If you have to think hard, you already have your answer.

11 Your friends stopped asking how it's going

There was a time when your best friend would call every Sunday and want the full report. What did he say, what did you say, are you okay, do you need me to come over? Now? Nothing. A quick "how are you" that doesn't wait for a real answer.

People around you have stopped asking because they already know. They've heard it for months, maybe years, and they can see you're not going anywhere. It gets exhausting for them, too, watching someone they love stay stuck.

And honestly, part of you is relieved. You don't have to explain the latest fight or defend him again or pretend this Tuesday was different from last Tuesday.

But sit with that for a second. Your closest people have gone quiet on the biggest part of your life. That's not them being cold. That's them running out of ways to help you.

When the people who love you stop asking, it usually means they've already made peace with something you haven't.

Love yourself enough to leave the table when respect is no longer being served.
